There are a lot of good rules to live by, not the least of which is the Golden Rule, which I’m not going to repeat here because hopefully you all remember it.
But there is a different sort of rule that we also live by – these are ones we make up and learn as the years pass. At the very least they’re what we call pet peeves and at their worst they are the things that really piss us off, that really offend us.
And here’s the big problem – many men, many of us are walking around just looking for reasons to be offended.
“He shouldn’t park like that!” “She can’t talk to me like that!” “Those kids should stop being so damn noisy!” “That client always waits until the last minute!”
Stop looking for ways to be offended. Which means stop creating all those little rules in your head about how others should be. “They should do this!”, “She should do that!” Worry about yourself, do your best and let the rest roll off your back. That’s better anti-stress advice than you get from your cardiologist.
Negative rules – stop creating them. Stop looking for reasons to be offended and get on with your life.
